CLINTON, La. — A man wanted in connection with an attempted murder investigation died by suicide Monday morning as law enforcement officers attempted to take him into custody, according to officials with the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office. The incident has left authorities continuing their investigation into both the original case and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Authorities say the incident occurred at approximately 10:35 a.m. when members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force moved in to arrest 33-year-old Nicholas Cunningham. Cunningham was wanted by the Jackson Police Department on an attempted murder charge stemming from a shooting earlier this year.
According to officials, as officers approached to execute the arrest, Cunningham took his own life. Law enforcement confirmed that no shots were fired by members of the task force during the operation, and no physical force was used in the attempt to apprehend him. The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office also clarified that it was not directly involved in carrying out the arrest.
Cunningham had been identified as one of two suspects connected to a shooting that occurred on April 2 on Charles Drive, where one person was injured. Investigators had been actively working the case in the weeks following the incident as they sought to locate and arrest those responsible.
The second suspect in the case, identified as Corente Anderson, had already been taken into custody on April 24. Authorities have not released additional details about the victim in the April shooting or the current condition of that individual.
Officials say the circumstances surrounding Cunningham’s death remain under investigation. At this time, no further information has been released as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the incident. The case remains active, and updates are expected as more details become available.
