59-year-old John Kanelakos Found Dead After Overnight Search in Silverdale Watershed

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — A tragic discovery in a rural watershed east of Silverdale has left a small Kansas community in mourning after authorities confirmed the death of 59-year-old John Kanelakos. Investigators believe his final moments may have been tied to an attempt to rescue an animal.

According to Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti, deputies were first called around 2:45 a.m. after a property owner noticed Kanelakos’ truck still running near the area but with no sign of him nearby. The unusual situation immediately prompted concern, and a search was launched in the surrounding rural terrain.

As deputies began sweeping the area, they found a pair of boots near the edge of the water, suggesting Kanelakos may have entered the watershed. However, there was no immediate sign of the missing man, leading authorities to call in additional emergency resources to assist with the search.

Multiple agencies joined the operation, including the Arkansas City Fire Department, which deployed boats into the water. Canine units, mounted search teams, and a specialized dive team from the Augusta Department of Public Safety also assisted as the search expanded through the early morning hours.

After several hours of coordinated efforts, the dive team located Kanelakos’ body in the watershed at approximately 10:30 a.m. Officials confirmed he was recovered from the water, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death was immediately launched.

Preliminary information suggests Kanelakos may have entered the water in an attempt to rescue a calf, though authorities stress that this has not yet been confirmed. An autopsy is expected to help determine the exact cause of death as investigators continue reviewing all details of the incident.

The loss has deeply impacted the Silverdale area, where residents are remembering a man whose final actions may have reflected compassion and instinct to help. As the investigation continues, officials are working to fully reconstruct what led to the tragic outcome.
