According to the City of Cedar Rapids and responding agencies, Freese was recovered from the river after an extensive search effort. In an attempt to retrieve it, he entered the river but was quickly caught by strong currents.

Emergency crews were dispatched around 4:34 p.m., launching a large-scale search involving police officers, firefighters, and water rescue teams. The operation expanded as conditions became more difficult, eventually bringing in the Johnson County Metro Dive Team to assist in the recovery effort along the fast-moving water.

After several hours of searching, rescuers located Freese at approximately 7:10 p.m., only a short distance from where he was last seen. Officials confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have since ruled the incident an accidental drowning based on preliminary findings.
