Walker Mourns Loss of Fire Chief Russell Shoultz “Rusty” After Medical Emergency

WALKER, La. — The city of Walker is grieving the sudden and unexpected loss of Fire Chief Russell “Rusty” Shoultz, who passed away early Friday morning following a medical emergency. His death has left a deep void within the fire department and the community he served with dedication and pride.

Mayor Gary Carey described the loss as “profound,” emphasizing that Shoultz was a leader who always put people first. He noted that the chief worked tirelessly to build trust between the fire department and the residents of Walker, strengthening relationships and fostering a sense of unity.

Emergency personnel from both the Walker Police Department and Fire Department responded to the medical call, but officials have not released further details out of respect for Shoultz’s family and those involved. The focus, city leaders say, remains on honoring his life and supporting those affected by his passing.

Shoultz had served as Walker Fire Chief since July 1 of last year, bringing with him more than 30 years of experience in fire service, emergency response, and public safety leadership. Prior to joining Walker, he served as chief of special operations for the St. George Fire Protection District, where he built a strong reputation for professionalism and commitment.

City officials highlighted the immediate impact he made in Walker, particularly his emphasis on training, preparedness, and modernizing department operations. He was also known for his dedication to community outreach and public safety education, efforts that left a lasting impression in a short period of time.

Support is now being provided to local firefighters and police officers as they cope with the loss, while neighboring agencies have stepped in to assist with coverage. A memorial is planned at Fire Station 1, with details of a public service expected soon. As the community mourns, Shoultz is being remembered as a respected leader, mentor, and friend whose legacy of service will not be forgotten.
