San Angelo Teen Charged With Murder in Fatal Shooting Outside Recreation Center

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A 17-year-old is facing a murder charge after a 19-year-old man was fatally shot outside the Northside Recreation Center, a violent incident that has left the San Angelo community shaken and authorities continuing to search for answers.

According to the San Angelo Police Department, officers responded at approximately 5:24 p.m. Thursday to reports of gunfire at the recreation center grounds. When officers arrived, they discovered 19-year-old Isaiah Bailon suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite emergency response efforts, Bailon was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators quickly launched a homicide investigation, treating the area as an active crime scene as evidence was collected and witnesses were interviewed. Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division worked alongside multiple specialized units, including the Gang Unit, Drone Unit, Narcotics Division, Special Operations Unit, K9 Unit, and Crime Scene Investigations team to process the scene.

During the course of the investigation, authorities identified 17-year-old Matthew Rodriguez as the suspect in the shooting. Police said preliminary findings suggest that Bailon and Rodriguez were involved in an illegal firearm transaction shortly before the deadly encounter occurred, though the exact sequence of events remains under review.

Rodriguez was later arrested and formally charged with murder. He is currently being held at the Tom Green County Jail on a $1,000,000 bond. Officials have not released further details regarding how the confrontation escalated, and investigators continue to examine evidence and witness statements.

The San Angelo Police Department confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing as detectives work to piece together what led to the fatal shooting. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward as the case develops. Meanwhile, the community is left grappling with the loss of a young life and the arrest of another teenager in a case that has raised serious concerns about youth violence and illegal firearms activity in the area.
