Teen Killed, Three Injured in Tragic Rollover Crash in Kelso; Alcohol Suspected

A tragic rollover crash in rural Cowlitz County, Washington, has left 18-year-old Ethan Ragsdale dead and three other teenagers injured, sending shock and grief through the Kelso and Longview communities. The fatal incident has also raised concerns after authorities said alcohol may have played a role in the devastating crash.

According to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a private rural roadway near Kelso on Saturday after reports of a single-vehicle rollover. When emergency responders arrived, they were met with a chaotic scene involving an overturned SUV that had come to rest on its side, with one person trapped underneath.

Investigators said Ragsdale, a senior at Mark Morris High School, was found pinned beneath the vehicle. Despite efforts from first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials also confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.

Three other teenagers who were passengers in the SUV were also injured in the crash. Authorities said they were transported to a hospital by private vehicle for medical treatment. At this time, officials have not released details about the extent of their injuries, and their current conditions remain unknown.

The driver, identified as 19-year-old Jacob Manecke Jr., remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators. Authorities said preliminary findings suggest that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash, though the full circumstances are still being examined as part of an ongoing investigation.

As the community comes to terms with the loss, Ragsdale’s family was notified at the scene, beginning an unimaginable period of grief. The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office said the case remains under active investigation, and once completed, findings will be forwarded to prosecutors for review of possible criminal charges. For now, friends, classmates, and loved ones are left mourning a young life cut short far too soon.
