20-year-old Elyis Taylor took his own life during an overnight police chase across Counties

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A late-night police chase that stretched across county lines ended in tragedy after a 20-year-old man from Tuscaloosa died from what authorities believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident has left the community shaken as investigators continue working to understand exactly what happened in the final moments of the pursuit.

Officials with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit identified the man as Elyis Kani Taylor. According to authorities, the situation began around 11:40 p.m. Monday when Tuscaloosa police officers attempted to stop Taylor for a traffic violation. What started as a routine stop quickly turned into a dangerous and fast-moving situation.

During the traffic stop, officers reported smelling what they believed to be illegal drugs coming from the vehicle. They instructed Taylor to step out of the car, but instead of complying, he suddenly fled the scene. This decision sparked a high-speed chase that quickly escalated, with officers reporting speeds of more than 100 miles per hour as the pursuit moved through multiple areas.

The chase came to a sudden and violent end when Taylor crashed his vehicle. When officers reached the scene, they found him suffering from critical injuries. Investigators later determined that he had sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities also revealed that Taylor had been in contact with a family member during the pursuit. During the call, he reportedly said he was running from police, had recently been released from jail, and feared going back into custody. The family member told investigators they heard what sounded like a gunshot just moments before the crash occurred.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit continues to investigate the case, including the events leading up to the chase and Taylor’s actions during it. Officials are reminding the public of the serious dangers tied to high-speed pursuits and the importance of obeying law enforcement. They also stress the need for mental health awareness and encourage anyone in crisis to seek help from emergency services or support hotlines, hoping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
