The Rose Valley community near Kelso, Washington, is mourning the tragic loss of 18-year-old Elden Ragsdale, who died in a devastating single-vehicle crash on April 18, 2026. Authorities say the incident has left family, friends, and classmates in shock as they come to terms with the sudden and heartbreaking loss.
According to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the 200 block of Maranatha Road following reports of a serious rollover crash. Callers told emergency responders that a vehicle had overturned and come to rest on its side, with a person trapped underneath. The urgency of the situation prompted a rapid response from multiple agencies.
When deputies and crews from Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue arrived, they found a 1994 Toyota 4Runner at the scene. Underneath the vehicle was Ragsdale, who had suffered critical injuries. Despite efforts to assess the situation, responders determined he had died at the scene. Authorities confirmed that his family was notified there, adding to the emotional weight of the tragedy.
Ragsdale was a senior at Mark Morris High School, and news of his death quickly reached the school community. District officials were informed so that counseling and support services could be made available to students and staff struggling with the loss of a young life taken too soon.
Investigators identified the driver as 19-year-old Jacob Manecke Jr., who remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Preliminary findings suggest that alcohol may have played a role in the crash, and officials also noted that Ragsdale was not wearing a seatbelt. Three other juvenile passengers were in the vehicle and were taken to a local medical facility by private vehicle for treatment, though their conditions have not been released.
The crash remains under active investigation, and officials say the findings will be forwarded to prosecutors for review to determine whether any charges will be filed. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by several agencies, including the Washington State Patrol and local emergency services, as authorities continue working to uncover all the factors that led to the deadly crash.
