MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A late-night crash in the Raleigh area has left one woman dead and two infants critically injured, with police confirming the driver has been arrested and charged. The heartbreaking incident has intensified concerns about impaired driving and its devastating consequences.
According to the Memphis Police Department, the crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. Thursday on Stage Road near Robbiedon Street. Investigators say a Nissan Murano driven by 33-year-old Travis Johnson lost control, struck a median, and overturned, causing severe damage and chaos at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that a 33-year-old female passenger, identified as Chasity Ervin, was killed in the crash. Her sudden death has left loved ones grieving a life taken too soon. Inside the vehicle were also Johnson’s two infant children — a 1-year-old and a 2-month-old — who suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
Police reported signs of impairment at the scene, noting that Johnson’s eyes were bloodshot and that containers of Colt 45 beer were found both inside and outside the vehicle. Investigators believe alcohol played a significant role in the crash, which has further deepened the tragedy.
Johnson was transported to the hospital for treatment before being taken into custody. He has since been charged with driving under the influence, public intoxication, reckless driving, and two counts of reckless endangerment. Authorities confirmed he was later booked into the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar.
As the investigation continues, the Memphis community is left mourning the loss of Chasity Ervin while hoping for the recovery of the two young children. The incident stands as a painful reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the irreversible impact it can have on families and communities.
