A quiet Tuesday afternoon in Johnson County turned into a scene of heartbreak and chaos after a deadly head-on collision claimed the life of 59-year-old Cary Dean Carlile of Morgantown. The tragic crash, involving two heavy-duty pickup trucks towing trailers, has left a community grieving and authorities searching for answers.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 1:55 p.m. at the intersection of West State Road 135 and County Road 500 West, commonly known as Spearsville Road. Emergency calls quickly flooded dispatch, prompting deputies and first responders to rush to the scene of what was described as a serious collision.
When authorities arrived, they were met with a devastating sight. Two Ford pickup trucks — a white Ford F-250 and a white Ford F-550 — had collided head-on with tremendous force. Both vehicles were pulling trailers at the time, making the impact even more destructive. The wreckage was scattered across the roadway, leaving little doubt about the severity of the crash.
Investigators revealed that the Ford F-250 had been traveling northbound when it suddenly crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. Early evidence suggests the driver may have attempted to brake before drifting across, as tire marks on the road appear to support that possibility. The truck then crashed directly into the southbound Ford F-550, causing catastrophic damage to both vehicles.
Cary Dean Carlile was pronounced dead at the scene by the Johnson County Coroner’s Office. Officials later confirmed his identity and stated that an autopsy will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, three other individuals involved in the crash sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals in the Indianapolis area. One victim, who was trapped beneath the steering column, had to be rescued by emergency crews before being airlifted by Lifeline helicopter due to critical injuries.
The crash led to the closure of State Road 135 at Spearsville Road for several hours as investigators worked to document the scene, clear debris, and reconstruct the sequence of events. Authorities are continuing to examine possible factors, including speed, driver behavior, and road conditions.
