CHATTANOOGA, TN — Authorities are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that left a 48-year-old man dead Saturday night in the East Lake Courts area, raising questions as officials work to understand exactly what led to the deadly encounter.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the incident happened just after 9:30 p.m. when officers with the Chattanooga Police Department responded to a disturbance call in the 2200 block of East 27th Street Court in Chattanooga’s East Lake community.
Officials say that during the encounter, a Chattanooga police officer discharged their weapon, striking the man involved. The man was later identified as 48-year-old Billy Joe Williams. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care, but he later died from his injuries.
Authorities have not yet released full details about what happened before the shooting. Investigators say it is still unclear what led to the confrontation or what actions resulted in the officer using deadly force. Officials have confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident.
At the request of 11th Judicial District Attorney General Coty Wamp, special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have taken over the case. Their role is to independently review the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine whether the use of force followed proper procedures.
The scene in East Lake Courts was secured shortly after the incident as investigators gathered evidence and spoke with witnesses in the area. Residents reported a heavy police presence late into the night as officials worked to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation emphasized that the case remains active and ongoing, and that more information will be released once it becomes available. As the investigation continues, the community is left waiting for answers while mourning the loss of Billy Joe Williams in a case that has deeply affected the East Lake neighborhood.
