MODESTO, Calif. — A South Modesto man has died after a tragic late-night pedestrian crash in which he was struck by multiple vehicles while walking along a busy roadway, according to Modesto police. The incident is now under investigation as authorities work to determine the full sequence of events.
Police say the crash happened around 8:50 p.m. Saturday on West Hatch Road between Boise Avenue and Dallas Street. Officers arrived at the scene after reports of a pedestrian-involved collision and found a man suffering from severe injuries in the roadway.
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 34-year-old Arquel Rogers of Modesto. Investigators confirmed that Rogers died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries before emergency medical personnel could transport him to a hospital.
According to preliminary findings, Rogers was walking in the roadway when he was first struck by an eastbound vehicle. Authorities say at least one additional vehicle also hit him shortly afterward, making the incident even more severe as traffic was still moving through the area.
Investigators noted that evidence and witness statements suggest Rogers may have also been struck by a third vehicle, described as a dark-colored pickup truck. Police confirmed that the drivers of the first two vehicles involved remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
However, officials say the driver of the suspected third vehicle did not remain at the scene after the collision. The Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, and the roadway was closed for several hours as officers documented evidence and processed the scene. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Modesto police traffic investigators as the case remains active.
