Massachusetts Trooper Kevin Trainor Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Route 1 in Lynnfield

LYNNFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts State Police are mourning the tragic loss of 30-year-old Trooper Kevin Trainor, who was killed early Wednesday morning, May 6, 2026, in a devastating wrong-way crash on Route 1 in Lynnfield. Officials described him as a dedicated officer whose service and sacrifice will be remembered across the department and beyond.

According to Colonel Geoffrey Noble of the Massachusetts State Police, the crash happened around 2:00 a.m. Troopers were responding to urgent reports of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 1. Officers were attempting to locate and stop the vehicle when the fatal collision occurred, turning what was already a dangerous situation into a tragedy.

Authorities said a four-door Jeep Wrangler driving in the wrong direction struck a marked State Police cruiser head-on. The impact was extremely violent. The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released the identity of the driver as the investigation continues and family notifications are completed.

Trooper Trainor, who was off-duty and heading home after finishing his shift, was inside the cruiser at the time of the crash. The force of the impact left him trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle. First responders worked quickly and carefully to free him from the wreckage before rushing him under a full police escort to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Despite emergency surgery and extensive medical efforts, Trainor later died from his injuries. The Massachusetts State Police shared their grief in a public statement, saying they extend their deepest condolences to his family, classmates, and loved ones. The department also said he will be remembered as a hero who served with honor and commitment.

Following the crash, Route 1 North in Lynnfield was shut down for about five hours while investigators examined the scene. The Massachusetts State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is continuing to study evidence, vehicle data, and witness statements to understand how the wrong-way driver entered the highway and what led to the collision. The investigation remains active.
