Driver Arrested for Manslaughter in Fatal Highway 20 Crash Near Sweet Home

SWEET HOME, Ore. — A heartbreaking crash along U.S. Highway 20 has claimed the life of a 69-year-old woman and led to serious criminal charges against another driver, according to Oregon State Police. The deadly collision has left the Sweet Home community grieving while authorities continue to investigate what caused the tragedy.

Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 5:44 p.m. on May 2 near milepost 21 in Linn County. Investigators say 30-year-old Mariah Darlene Lopez was driving a white Jeep Wrangler westbound when she allegedly crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic, creating a dangerous and ultimately deadly situation.

According to officials, Lopez’s vehicle collided head-on with a black Kia Forte driven by 69-year-old Karen Gail Ramirez, who was traveling eastbound. The impact of the crash was severe, and authorities say Ramirez was ejected from her vehicle upon collision, highlighting the force involved.

Emergency crews arrived quickly and attempted to provide aid, but despite their efforts, Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sudden death has left family members, friends, and community members mourning a life lost too soon.

Authorities reported that Lopez suffered only minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Investigators also noted that she was allegedly driving recklessly prior to the crash, a factor that remains central to the case as officials work to determine the full sequence of events.

Following the initial investigation, Lopez was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter. After being released from the hospital, she was taken into custody and booked into the Linn County Jail. The crash shut down Highway 20 for nearly four hours as emergency crews, including the Lebanon Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation, worked the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
