Motorcyclist, Jeffery McDonald killed as High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Crash on I-80 in Lincoln

Lincoln, Nebraska — A fatal motorcycle crash following a brief police pursuit has left a 59-year-old Lincoln man dead and prompted an ongoing investigation in Lancaster County. Authorities have identified the rider as Jeffery McDonald, who died Saturday evening near the Interstate 80 interchange at NW 48th Street.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the incident began around 7:50 p.m. on May 2, 2026, when a trooper observed McDonald traveling westbound on I-80 at a high rate of speed. The trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop after noticing the speeding motorcycle, but the rider did not pull over.

Instead, officials say McDonald accelerated, leading to a short pursuit on the interstate. Investigators report that during the pursuit, the motorcycle was seen weaving through traffic, using the shoulder of the roadway, and creating dangerous conditions for other motorists traveling on I-80.

The pursuit lasted less than three minutes before coming to an end. Authorities say McDonald exited the interstate at the NW 48th Street ramp, where he was unable to safely navigate the off-ramp. The motorcycle then crashed near the interchange shortly after exiting.

The trooper arrived at the scene moments later, immediately called for emergency medical assistance, and began life-saving efforts. Despite those efforts, McDonald was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.

The Nebraska State Patrol has requested that the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office lead the investigation into the crash. Preliminary findings indicate that speed was a contributing factor, and investigators are also examining whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the incident. Officials say the investigation remains active as they work to fully understand the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
