A night that began with celebration ended in tragedy early Sunday morning after gunfire erupted at a post-prom gathering on Indianapolis’ near north side. The shooting, which took place at a rental home, left one person dead and three others injured, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving families grieving an unimaginable loss.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers were called around 12:45 a.m. on May 3 to the 4000 block of North Park Avenue, near North College Avenue and 38th Street, following reports of a person shot. When officers arrived at the scene, they located at least one victim suffering from gunshot wounds, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Shortly after the initial call, two more victims arrived at Methodist Hospital with gunshot injuries. Investigators believe those individuals were also shot at the same residence, where a post-prom party was being held. The gathering reportedly drew a large crowd, including teenagers who had come together to celebrate after their school event.
Authorities say chaos broke out when gunfire suddenly rang out, causing partygoers to flee in panic. During the confusion, another person was injured while trying to escape the scene. In total, three individuals were struck by gunfire. One victim later died from their injuries, another remains in critical condition, and a third sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Loved ones have identified the deceased victim as Brittany Grundy. Her death has left family members and friends heartbroken, as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of someone they deeply cherished. Many are remembering her as a bright presence whose life was taken far too soon, leaving behind painful memories and unanswered questions.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death. Meanwhile, investigators continue to gather evidence and speak with witnesses in an effort to understand what led to the shooting. No suspects have been publicly identified, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers as the search for answers continues.
