Boston Says Goodbye: Detective Bruce Higgins, Jr. Passes After Courageous Battle

The Boston Police Department is draped in sorrow following the passing of highly respected Detective Bruce W. Higgins, Jr. Detective Higgins died on Sunday, November 2, 2025, after a courageous and intensely private battle with melanoma. Throughout his illness, Bruce demonstrated remarkable strength and refused to let his diagnosis define the incredible life of service, leadership, and deep personal commitment he lived every day.

Bruce began his distinguished law enforcement career at the Boston Police Academy on October 20, 2003. He later earned the rank of Detective in 2012. He served the Boston community with exceptional dedication in assignments that included C-11 (Dorchester) and the critical Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit). His professionalism and unwavering commitment to justice earned him profound respect from both his colleagues and the citizens he served.

His exemplary service was formally recognized in 2012 when he was awarded the Trooper George L. Hanna Memorial Award, the highest law enforcement honor in all of Massachusetts, for his extraordinary contributions and bravery. This award stands as a powerful testament to the dedication Bruce brought to the badge throughout his two decades of service to the city.

Beyond his police career, Bruce Higgins was a memorable star on the basketball court. He excelled at Catholic Memorial and then became a standout player at Bridgewater State University (BSU), where he scored an impressive 1,727 points. He later returned to his high school alma mater to coach, where his humility, leadership, and mentorship powerfully guided countless young athletes, a role that brought him immense satisfaction.

Bruce held many important roles—Detective, Point Guard, Coach, Partner, and Mentor—but the ones he cherished most were Husband and Father. The heartfelt condolences of the Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society go out to his wife, Lori, and their children, Madelyn and Ryan. The entire department shares in their grief during this heartbreaking time.

“Rest peacefully, Bruce Higgins Jr. Your legacy of service, leadership, and love will continue to inspire all who knew you,” read the solemn statement from his colleagues. “The watch is ours now; yours is well done.” His life remains an enduring example of dedication to both family and community.
