Jones County, Jeremy Harris, Obituary, Death: Local driver unhurt after motorcycle slams into back of dump trailer during fatal passing maneuver.

A local man from Stamford found himself in the middle of a nightmare Monday night on a familiar stretch of road. Jeremy Harris was just doing some routine driving on State Highway 6 when his evening took a dark turn. He was pulling a heavy dump trailer with his Ford F-350, headed north through Jones County, when a high-speed accident claimed the life of a young traveler from out of state.

The crash happened just south of Farm-to-Market Road 704, an area where people are used to seeing plenty of trucks and farm equipment. Jeremy was minding his own business in the northbound lane when Mason Alkire, a 22-year-old from Maryland, came up behind him on a fast motorcycle. Troopers say the biker was pushing his Kawasaki Ninja well past the speed limit as he tried to navigate the evening traffic.

Witnesses and investigators noted that Mason had just whipped around another vehicle to get ahead. When he merged back into the lane behind Jeremy’s truck, he realized too late how fast he was closing the gap. He couldn’t get the bike under control in time. The motorcycle slammed hard into the rear of Jeremy’s trailer, creating a scene that brought emergency lights flashing into the West Texas night.

While the impact was devastating for the young biker, Jeremy was lucky. He was buckled up and didn’t suffer any injuries in the collision. It’s a testament to the size of his rig, but it doesn’t make the situation any easier to process. Having a fatal accident happen right at your bumper is a heavy burden for any local driver to carry home.

The authorities arrived quickly to manage the scene. Justice of the Peace Cheryl Guernsey was called out to confirm the passing of the young man from Maryland. The road stayed busy with investigators for quite a while as they tried to piece together exactly how fast the bike was going. They confirmed the biker was wearing his safety gear, but the speed was simply too high for a helmet to make the difference.

Traffic was backed up for a bit while the crews cleared the debris and moved the damaged Kawasaki. This part of Texas is usually pretty quiet, mostly filled with folks moving between small communities, so a wreck this bad really gets the neighbors talking. Everyone is just thankful that no other drivers or bystanders were swept up in the crash.

As it stands, the Texas Department of Public Safety is still looking into the fine details. They haven’t found any reason to believe alcohol played a part, and Jeremy isn’t facing any charges. It appears to be a tragic case of a young person losing control on a fast machine. It’s a sad story that has left the local community thinking about the family all the way back in Maryland.
