INDIANAPOLIS — A 22-year-old man has died after a late-night shooting on the city’s near east side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). The fatal incident occurred Friday night and is now under active investigation as detectives work to determine what led to the violence.
Police say officers were dispatched around 10:00 p.m. on May 1, 2026, to the 3600 block of Brookside Parkway South near North Sherman Drive after receiving reports of a person shot. The call prompted a swift response from multiple units in the area as officers moved to secure the scene.
When officers arrived, they located a young man suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders immediately began providing medical assistance before transporting him to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Despite those efforts, the victim was later pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
On May 4, the Marion County Coroner’s Office officially identified the victim as 22-year-old Juelz Lamar Nance. His death has added to growing concern in the community as residents continue to grapple with ongoing incidents of gun violence in the area.
Investigators have not yet released any information about a possible suspect or a motive behind the shooting. Police say it remains unclear what circumstances led up to the incident, and detectives are continuing to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses who may have been in the area at the time.
The area was secured by officers following the shooting as investigators processed the scene for forensic evidence. IMPD is urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward, either by contacting Detective James Hurt or submitting anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana. Authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing as they work to bring clarity and answers to the victim’s family and the community.
