Edinburg, Texas — A heartbreaking overnight crash has left a 39-year-old mother dead and three children injured after an alleged intoxicated driver ran a red light at a busy intersection. The tragic incident occurred Saturday night at Salinas Street and West Monte Cristo Road, leaving families devastated and a community in shock.
According to the Edinburg Police Department, the crash involved a westbound vehicle driven by 31-year-old Miguel Angel Suarez. Investigators say Suarez allegedly failed to stop at a red light and entered the intersection, where he struck another vehicle that was already crossing through the roadway.
Authorities confirmed that the second vehicle carried five occupants, including three young children—a 9-year-old boy, a 5-year-old boy, and a 4-year-old girl. The violent impact caused severe damage to the vehicle and resulted in critical injuries and loss of life for those inside.
The driver of the struck vehicle, identified as 39-year-old Martha Luna Miranda, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sudden death has left her family and loved ones in deep mourning as they struggle to process the tragedy that unfolded in seconds.
Miranda’s husband, who was seated in the front passenger seat, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from the hospital. The 4-year-old girl was also treated and released, while the two boys were transported to a hospital in San Antonio for further medical care. Their conditions have not been fully released, but officials say they remain under observation.
Police say Miguel Angel Suarez is expected to face serious charges, including intoxication manslaughter and four counts of intoxication assault. Formal charges are still pending as investigators continue gathering evidence and reconstructing the crash. Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala described the incident as a devastating reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and urged the public to make responsible choices. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as the community grieves a loss that has deeply impacted both a family and the city.
